Producing quality content
The content we produce online will often be directly related to the ANU reputation, which is why we want to ensure that the content out there is of sufficient quality. There are a number of different aspects that impact the quality of this content so we have collected a few resources that can help our editors with this.
Writing good content
ANU has produced a few guidelines to help our content creators write compelling stories that fit the ANU identity. Please see these resources below.
Using the right images
Using appropriate images alongside your content will make for a much better user experience. There are also some accessibility needs to make your content accessible for all audiences.
See the basic rules below:
- Never use an image that has text in the image itself. In the mobile responsive view this may get cropped or warped and become unreadable. For banners use the page title instead.
- Always include appropriate alternative text for your images. These will be used in screen readers to assist users with accessibility needs. This guidance from Harvard provides more information writing helpful alt text.
- Large images that are displayed in full width or in the banner, should be between no larger than 1 MB. Anything over that sized can significantly impact the loading time of the webpage, particularly for those with slower internet speeds. This is especially important for foreign audiences where loading times can be even more excessive due to server distance.
- Other small web graphics should be 300KB or less.
- If you don’t have any image editing software, you can edit the image in paint and resize until you have the right size. You may also be able to use Adobe Creative Cloud solutions.
- A large image can be displayed smaller, but zooming a small image will make it appear pixelated.
- Never use a resolution higher than 72dpi.
