Templated websites

This page contains information for some of the features on the templated websites.

New templated websites

We are now using a 'website template' that helps us roll out new websites quicker, more consistently and better to support. The landscape of these new websites has been greatly simplified and aims to have a much better user experience for our editors.

Content types

The new template uses only 5 different content types. See the below table for more information on each content type:

Content typeDescription
Basic page

Most of the static pages on your website will be basic pages. These contain all the information you want to share with your audience aside from any events, news articles and the landing pages. You will be able to link to a variety of other content from this content type.

As an editor you will be able to edit existing and create new instances of this content type

Contact

The contact content type allows us to create contacts and allow us to reference to those contacts from other webpages. That way, if their information is updated, you have to only update it in a single place. For the reason we strongly recommend you to use this feature to communicate any contact details, as opposed to writing contact details in the body of any of the other pages. Should that information ever change, you will need to locate each page that contains the faulty details.

The contact content type allows you to create a contact page as well. By default this option will be unticked, meaning that you can show contacts on other pages but they wouldn't have their own page. For more information review the 'Contact' collapsible below.

As an editor you will be able to edit existing and create new instances of this content type

Events

The events content type is set up to easily record the dates, location and registration options for events. This renewed content type works a little bit different than the similar content type on gateway. For more information, refer to the 'Events' collapsible below. You will be able to reference a variety of other content types such as contact and basic pages.

As an editor you will be able to edit existing and create new instances of this content type

News

The news content type allows us to publish and date news articles easily. You are able to start the article with a (optional) pull quote. News articles are also able to reference other news articles, events or basic pages.

As an editor you will be able to edit existing and create new instances of this content type

Landing pagesLanding pages are the only content type editors can edit but cannot create. As the landing pages require custom coding, they can only be requested by logging a ticket on the service desk. They will be set up in such a way that the content itself can be edited easily in the same way as the other content types.

Contacts content type

Creating contacts with/ without pages

When creating a contact, you will be able to create the contact as:

  1. A contact for reference only. This type of contact can be shown on other pages but the contact itself will not have its own page. Generally, the majority of contacts are for reference only.
  2. A contact for reference AND its own page. These contacts can still be reference on other pages like the first option but they will also have their own standalone page. This allows us to write up a larger story around the person. An example of this would be something like: https://www.anu.edu.au/about/governance/committees/the-hon-julie-bishop

By default a contact will be created 'for reference only'. If you wish to create a contact with their own page, simple tick the 'Requires page' tick box at the top of the page when you are in editor mode. This will enable the 'paragraph with media' and 'related content' fields in the editors view.

Related content

If you have selected the 'Requires page' tick box for the contact, you will be able to add related content to the page. You can choose to do this in two ways, manually or automatically:

  • Manual: You will be able to add multiple 'link group' with various links under each group. You can link to both internal and external links. Internal links (if set correctly) will update automatically if the page moves (but will not remove it if unpublished).
  • Automated: When you select automated, it will create a link group called 'related pages' that will link all basic pages the contact has been referenced on.
